How to paint on rusted metal?

When repainting rusty metal products, it’s recommended to apply a rust inhibitor and a suitable primer to improve adhesion, ensuring a more durable paint surface. Here’s a short guide to help you achieve the best results.

1. Preparation

Choose a well-ventilated area for painting and protect any surfaces you don’t want to paint. Thoroughly clean the surface, removing all dirt and grease. To improve adhesion, especially on rusty metal surfaces, light sanding with 180-grit sandpaper is recommended. Finish by removing any grease with Maston Degreaser and allow it to dry completely before proceeding with the next step.

2. Priming

Treat the rusty metal surface with Maston Rust Stop rust inhibitor (product no: 607600). Apply it with a small brush and allow the surface to dry. The surface will turn dark once dry. To improve adhesion, use Maston Metal Primer (Spray Primer for Aluminum & Galvanized Metal, 400ml, product no: 400524). Spray an even, thin layer and let it dry according to the instructions. Maston Metal Primer is a special primer that ensures excellent adhesion to metal surfaces before the final painting.

3. Painting

Use metal paint – we recommend Maston Hammer Smooth or Hammered finish spray or can paint, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Apply the paint in smooth, back-and-forth motions, using several thin coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. This method prevents paint runs and ensures a smooth surface.

4. Finishing

Hammer metal paints do not require a clear coat. Repainting should only be done with Hammer paints from the same series.
