How to paint car rims with spray paint?

Painting your car rims is a rewarding task. With some minor painting, you can restore your rims to a like-new condition cost-effectively and with ease.

Here’s a short guide to help you achieve the best results

What you’ll need to spray paint the rims:

• Maston Brake Cleaner (cleaning agent)
• Maston Acrylic Primer (ONE)
• Maston CarColor Spray Paint or AutoACRYL Wheel Spray. You may choose either one.
• Maston 2K PU Clear Coat
• Sandpaper
• Clean cloth
• Protective materials, such as newspapers

Four steps for a successful finish:

1. Preparation

• Choose a suitable location for painting.

• Cover areas that you do not want to paint to protect them from spray mist, etc.

• If the rims are still attached to the tires, protect the tires as well. A handy trick is to use playing cards—insert them between the rim and the tire.

• Sand down any uneven surfaces and clean off dirt, dust, and grease using Maston Brake Cleaner or Maston Degreaser.

2. Painting Process

• Apply the primer first and follow the drying times. If using Maston ONE primer, allow a 5-minute break between coats. Spray from a 15 cm distance.

• Apply the topcoat (Maston CarColor), spraying from a 25 cm distance. Wait about 30 minutes between coats. If using a different paint, check the drying times on the can.

• Apply several thin layers, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next. If a layer is thick, let it dry longer.

• Once the paint has dried, apply the clear coat (e.g., Maston 2K PU Clear Coat). Let it dry completely. Dry to the touch in 12 hours, fully cured in 7 days.

If using a different clear coat, check the drying time on the can (e.g., acrylic dries in 24 hours).

• Coverage: Approx. 1.5m² (topcoat).

3. Drying Time

• Always check the drying time for each type of paint on the manufacturer’s instructions or on the back of the can.

4. Cleaning

• For stain removal, we recommend Maston Thinner.

Tips for the Best Results

• Always work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.

• Test the paint on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility.

•  Be patient at each step to ensure the best possible finish.

By following these instructions, your rims will look as good as new without requiring extensive repairs. Adding a new coat of paint is a cost-effective and relatively simple way to refresh worn-out rims.
