Painting the wooden and metal parts of a greenhouse

Many may ask: can i paint the aluminum or wooden parts of the greenhouse easily? The short answer is: YES you can!

Here is a short guide on how to paint the wooden and metal parts of a greenhouse easily and affordably using spray paint or canned paint.

Required tools and materials for painting the wood and metal parts of the greenhouse

• Maston Hammer Smooth metal paint (spray or can)
• Maston Paint Remover
• Maston Degreaser
• Maston Primer for aluminum and galvanized metal
• Sandpaper (180 grit)
• Painter’s tape
• Protective paper, plastic sheeting, or newspapers
• Brush (if using canned paint)
• Protective gear (mask, gloves, safety glasses)

Step-by-Step guide on how to paint aluminum, metal or wooden parts of your greenhouse

1. Preparations

• Choose a well-ventilated area for painting or work outdoors.
• Cover any areas you do not want to paint to protect them from overspray and splashes.

2. Removing or protecting doors and fixtures

• Use a screwdriver or another suitable tool to remove doors and any fixtures, such as handles and hinges, or cover them with painter’s tape or newspapers.
• Label the doors to make reinstallation easier if there are multiple ones.
• If desired, you can also paint the handles or pulls in your preferred color.

3. Clean and sand the surface

• Thoroughly clean the surfaces to be painted to remove grease and dirt.
• Carefully scrape off any loose or peeling paint from wooden surfaces, then sand them lightly.
• Remove paint from metal parts using Maston Paint Remover.
• Lightly sand the surface with 180-grit sandpaper to improve paint adhesion.
• Clean the surfaces with Maston Degreaser.

4. Paint the wooden and metal parts with Maston Hammer metal paint

• For aluminum, galvanized, zinc-coated, stainless steel, brass, and copper surfaces, we recommend priming with Maston Aluminum & Galvanized Metal Primer.
• Use Maston Hammer Metal Paint, which provides excellent UV protection for a long-lasting finish and is suitable for both metal and wooden surfaces.
• Apply the paint lightly and evenly by spraying or using a brush.
• Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Typically, one or two coats are enough for good coverage.

5. Reassemble the parts

• Once the paint is fully dry, reattach the fixtures and reinstall the doors.
• Remove all protective coverings and clean the workspace.
• The metal paint will be dry to the touch in 24 hours, but full curing takes 7 days.

• Test the paint on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure the color and finish meet your expectations.
• Take your time at each stage to achieve a high-quality result.
