Spray painting kitchen cabinets – how to spray paint kitchen cabinets
Transforming your kitchen can be as simple as changing the color of your cabinets. Spray painting is a popular, cheap and effective method to achieve a smooth, professional finish. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to spray paint kitchen cabinets.
Materials needed to spray paint kitchen cabinets
- Spraypaint (Maston ONE)
- Primer (Maston ONE)
- Sandpaper (180 grit)
- Painter’s tape
- Plastic sheeting
- Screwdriver
- Drop cloths
- Safety gear (mask, gloves, goggles)
Step-by-Step painting guide
1. Prepare for the painting
- Ensure your kitchen cabinets can be painted. Maston ONE spray paint can be applied on almost all materials such as wood, mdf, laminate, plastic and different metals.
- Select a well-ventilated area to paint.
- Cover areas you do not want to paint to protect them from overspray
2. Remove cabinet doors and hardware
- Use a screwdriver to remove the cabinet doors, drawers, and all hardware such as handles and hinges.
- Label each door and its corresponding location to make reinstallation easier.
- If you want, you can also follow the same instruction to paint the handles to a desired color.
3. Clean and sand the cabinets
- Clean the surfaces of the cabinets thoroughly to remove grease and dirt.
- Sand the cabinets lightly with 180 grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to.
- Clean the surfaces with Maston Degreaser.
4. Apply primer
- Test application on a non-visible area.
- Apply two to three coats of Maston ONE primer to the cabinets and doors. This helps the paint adhere better and provides a uniform base.
- Allow the primer to dry.
5. Spray paint the cabinets
- We recommend using Maston ONE – an acrylic paint (ONE spray paint gloss, matt or satin) , which dries quickly and offers superior UV-resistance for a long-lasting finish.
- Apply the paint in light, even coats.
- Allow each coat to dry before applying the next one. Usually, two to three coats are sufficient for good coverage.
- For improved wear resistance we recommend applying two coats of Maston ONE lacquer after the paint layers. Follow the instructions on the can.
6. Reassemble the cabinets
- Once the paint is fully dry, reattach the hardware and reinstall the cabinet doors and drawers.
- Remove all protective coverings and clean up the workspace.
Tips for best results
- Always work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.
- Test the spray paint on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure the color and finish meet your expectations.
- Take your time with each step to ensure a high-quality finish.
By following these steps, you can give your kitchen a fresh, new look without the expense of replacing your cabinets. Spray painting is a cost-effective and relatively easy way to update your kitchen.
